NATO plans to build a gas pipeline between Spain and Germany

Spanish media reported that NATO countries are considering the possibility of building a gas pipeline from Spain to France and Germany, which will reduce the dependence of Central Europe on Russian gas. It is noted that Germany is very interested in the new project.

The publication also notes that on the Iberian Peninsula, on the territory of Spain and Portugal, there are eight regasification stations necessary for processing liquefied gas.

Recall that three years ago, French and Spanish regulators blocked the initiative to create the Midcat gas pipeline due to the unprofitability of its construction as part of the transition to renewable energy sources. However, now that the issue of restarting a new cross-border connection with France to deliver gas to the central part of Europe has become acute for NATO, the Midcat project may resume.

To date, the main way to provide gas to Europe is the Russian Nord Stream-2 project – a gas pipeline with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year. However, the certification process of the project has been suspended pending the necessary documentation, as well as due to the escalation of geopolitical tensions on the border of Ukraine and Russia.
