Iraqi Oil Minister Ihsan Ismail said that the country is discussing the supply of 1.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas per year from Qatar.

Ismail also noted that if the countries manage to reach an agreement, the shipment of gas will begin at the end of August. In the meantime, work will be carried out on the preparation of reception facilities and equipment in Iraq.

According to the minister, one and a half million tons of LNG per year will give the country 400-500 million cubic feet per day to maintain the operation of the electricity grid and support supplies to the gas network in southern Iraq. One hundred percent increase in energy is expected by 2024.

Currently, there are several gas projects in Iraq: Halfaya in Al-Amar, the JA project in Nasiriyah, two projects with Total in the south of the country and three Basra Gas Company plants with Shell, as well as the Mansouriya field under the management of the Chinese company Sinopec.

The Minister also stressed that the Iraqi authorities have no plans to become a gas exporter, but expect their country to lead the world in the export of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and refined petroleum products (ligroin) in the coming years.
