At the G7 summit in Canada, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba held talks with US President Donald Trump, but an agreement on customs duties could not be reached.

Isiba stressed that the possibility of concluding an agreement that would take into account Tokyo's interests was discussed, but a number of issues remained unresolved. The relevant ministries have been instructed to continue negotiations.

Tensions in trade relations between the two countries intensified after Trump's decision to impose additional duties of 25% on steel and aluminum imports. The move has raised concerns from the Japanese government, which has repeatedly called on Washington to reconsider the measures. In addition, Japan expressed dissatisfaction with the 25% tariffs on cars and spare parts, as well as the 24% levy on all imports from the United States.

Despite the discussions, the parties were unable to overcome their differences, and the issue of customs duties remains unresolved. Negotiations will continue at the ministerial level.
