Swedish Foreign Trade Minister Benjamin Dawsa criticized the US decision to impose 30% tariffs on goods from the EU and Mexico, warning of the risk of a full-scale trade war. He stated this at an emergency meeting of EU trade ministers in Brussels.

«The United States has escalated the situation, and we do not rule out that we will be involved in a trade war,» he said. According to Dawsa, Europe cannot accept such tariffs and has always sought a negotiated solution, while the White House continues to act unilaterally.

The minister added that the EU must be prepared for the worst-case scenario and is already considering retaliatory measures. Sweden has supported €20 billion worth of countermeasures, and a new €70 billion package is also being prepared. The European Union is simultaneously exploring the expansion of trade relations with South America, India and Indonesia.

Earlier, Donald Trump announced the introduction of new duties from August 1, which jeopardized negotiations on a trade agreement with the EU. In response, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, promised to protect the interests of the bloc and did not rule out mirror measures.
