27.08. Retail sales in the UK fall for the 11th month in a row due to rising prices

Retail sales in the UK declined in August for the eleventh month in a row, according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). The sales index was -32 against -34 in July and -46 in June.

The reason: prices in stores are rising at the fastest pace since the end of 2023.

Rising prices and high costs continue to put pressure on the sector, CBI Chief Economist Martin Sartorius said. According to him, weak demand and rising costs are reducing profitability, which is reflected in companies' investment and hiring plans.

The forecast for September improved slightly, with the leading indicator rising to -16, indicating a softening of the recession, although the retail situation remains difficult.
